Sawan Somvar Vrat Katha: The Sacred Story
No Sawan Somvar Vrat (Monday fast) is considered complete without reading or listening to the sacred Vrat Katha (story). Reciting this story after your evening puja brings peace, resolves life’s obstacles, and ensures Lord Shiva's blessings.
The Story of the Wealthy Merchant
Once upon a time, there lived a wealthy merchant in a prosperous city. He had immense wealth, a grand home, and a loving wife, but he was deeply sorrowful because he had no children.
Desperate for a child, the merchant would visit the local Shiva temple every Monday. He observed the Somvar Vrat with intense devotion, offering Belpatra, water, and prayers to the Shivling.
Seeing his pure devotion, Goddess Parvati was moved and requested Lord Shiva to grant the merchant a boon. Shiva smiled and said, "Destiny cannot be altered easily, but because of his unwavering devotion, I will bless him with a son. However, the boy will only live to the age of 16."
The Birth of the Son
Soon after, the merchant's wife gave birth to a beautiful boy. While the family celebrated, the merchant remained secretly worried, knowing the child's lifespan was short. He named the boy Amar and sent him to Kashi (Varanasi) for his education, accompanied by his maternal uncle.
The merchant strictly instructed the uncle: "Do not engage in any celebrations along the way. Stop at every Shiva temple, perform charity, and worship the Shivling."

The Miracle in Kashi
On their way to Kashi, they passed a kingdom where a princess was being married to a prince who was blind in one eye. The prince's family, trying to hide this defect, requested Amar to pose as the groom for the ceremony. Amar agreed, but out of honesty, he left a note for the princess revealing his true identity. The princess, reading the note, accepted Amar as her true husband and refused to go with the deceptive prince.
Amar and his uncle continued to Kashi and dedicated themselves to Lord Shiva's worship.
On the exact day Amar turned 16, he was performing a Rudrabhishekam in the temple. Suddenly, he fell to the ground, lifeless.
The Grace of Lord Shiva
His uncle began weeping loudly. At that very moment, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were passing by the temple. Hearing the wails of a true devotee, Parvati pleaded with Shiva, "My Lord, please look at the sorrow of this family who have worshipped you so deeply."
Lord Shiva, moved by the uncle's cries and the boy's lifelong devotion to the Shivling, approached the lifeless body. By his divine grace, Shiva resurrected the boy, granting him a long, prosperous life.
Amar returned home with his bride, the princess, and the merchant's family lived happily ever after, spreading the glory of the Sawan Somvar Vrat.
Conclusion
The Sawan Somvar Vrat Katha teaches us that unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva, especially through the daily worship of a Narmadeshwar Shivling, can alter even the hardest of destinies.
Om Namah Shivaya!
