Can Women Touch and Worship the Shivling? Clarifying Vedic Rules

A widespread and unfortunate myth has circulated for decades suggesting that women — especially unmarried girls — are forbidden from touching or worshipping the Shivling.

Let us be absolutely clear: This is entirely false.

According to the Shiva Purana and the broader Vedic tradition, women have the exact same rights to worship, touch, and perform Jal Abhishekam on the Shivling as men do. In fact, Shiva is incomplete without Shakti (the divine feminine).

1. Shiva-Shakti: The Inseparable Union

The Shivling itself is not just a representation of Lord Shiva; it is a representation of the cosmic union of Shiva (the Lingam) and Shakti (the Yoni Pitha / Jaldhara base).

To say that a woman cannot touch the Shivling contradicts the very physical structure of the deity, which rests eternally upon the feminine divine base. The Ardhanarishvara form of Shiva literally means "The Lord who is half woman."

2. Unmarried Girls and the 16 Somvar Vrat

Another common misconception is that unmarried girls should stay away from the Shivling.

On the contrary, the Solah Somvar Vrat (16 Monday Fasts) is most famously observed by unmarried girls specifically to seek Lord Shiva's blessings in finding a good, righteous husband (just as Goddess Parvati fasted to win Lord Shiva). During this fast, unmarried girls actively pour water and milk over the Shivling.

3. The Rules Regarding Menstruation (Periods)

The only strict guideline regarding female worship of the Shivling pertains to menstruation (periods). This rule, however, is not specific to Lord Shiva — it applies to all Hindu deities and temple spaces under the concept of Sutak (ritual hygiene and energetic rest).

During the 4-5 days of Menstruation:

  • Physical Touch: Women should refrain from physically touching the Shivling, the altar, or the puja items.
  • Jal Abhishekam: Women should not pour water or milk on the Shivling during these days.
  • Temple Visits: It is traditionally advised to avoid entering the physical space of a temple or home mandir.

What Women CAN Do During Periods:

  • Manasik Puja (Mental Worship): Lord Shiva is known as Bholenath (the innocent lord who looks only at the devotee's heart). Mental worship during periods is highly encouraged and yields the exact same spiritual merit.
  • Chanting: You can absolutely chant Om Namah Shivaya or the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra silently or aloud from your bed or resting space.
  • Fasting: If a Monday fast falls during your period, you can continue the fast normally; you just skip the physical bathing of the Shivling and let a family member do it, or perform it mentally.

4. How Women Should Perform the Puja

When not menstruating, women should perform the daily puja with full devotion:

  1. Bathe and wear clean clothes.
  2. Pour clean water (Jal) and milk over the Narmadeshwar Shivling.
  3. Offer Belpatra (ensure the smooth side touches the stone).
  4. Chant Om Namah Shivaya.

Conclusion: Do not let cultural myths keep you away from the divine. Lord Shiva is the ultimate father figure of the universe, and his grace is equally available to all his daughters. Ensure you have a genuine Narmadeshwar Shivling at home and worship it with a pure heart!
