How to Offer Belpatra on a Shivling

Of all the offerings made to Lord Shiva, the Belpatra (Bilva Patra) is the most beloved. A single offering of a three-leaf Belpatra with true devotion is said to wash away the sins of three lifetimes.

If you are performing a puja on your Narmadeshwar Shivling during Sawan Somvar, following the correct rules for offering Bel leaves is essential.

1. The Structure of the Belpatra

A standard Belpatra consists of a single stalk with three leaves. These three leaves represent:

  • The Trinity: Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.
  • The three eyes of Lord Shiva.
  • The three Gunas: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas.

Rule: Never offer a single, detached leaf. The offering must always be a complete trifoliate (three leaves together on one stem).

2. Which Side Should Face the Shivling?

This is the most common mistake devotees make!

  • The smooth, shiny side of the leaf should ALWAYS be placed facing down, touching the surface of the Shivling.
  • The rough side with the visible veins should face upward.

3. Preparation Before Offering

Before offering the Belpatra:

  1. Wash it thoroughly with clean water.
  2. Break off the thick, knobby part at the very bottom of the stem (known as the Vajra).
  3. (Optional but highly auspicious) Use sandalwood paste (Chandan) to write "Om" (ॐ) or "Ram" (राम) on the three leaves. Lord Shiva is deeply pleased when he sees the name of Lord Ram.

4. When NOT to Pluck Bel Leaves

According to the Skanda Purana, you should never pluck Bel leaves on specific days:

  • Mondays (Somvar)
  • Chaturthi (4th lunar day)
  • Ashtami (8th lunar day)
  • Navami (9th lunar day)
  • Amavasya (New Moon)
  • Sankranti

Wait, if you can't pluck them on Monday, how do you offer them on Sawan Somvar? You should pluck the leaves on Sunday! If you forget, the scriptures say that Belpatra never becomes impure (stale). You can actually wash a previously offered Belpatra and offer it again!

5. The Offering Mantra

As you place the Belpatra on the Narmadeshwar Shivling, chant the following mantra:

Tridalam Trigunakaram Trinetram Cha Triyayudham
Trijanma Papa Samharam Bilvapatram Sivarpanam

(I offer this Bilva leaf, which has three leaves, represents the three gunas, three eyes, and three weapons, and destroys the sins of three births, to Lord Shiva.)
